Where Forests Fade, Bears Follow The Smell Of Human Survival Into Settlements

Royal Bakery in the Nilgiris attracts bears drawn by the smell of oil and fresh baking, bringing wildlife uncomfortably close to people every day.

After decades of habitat loss and prolonged drought, bears increasingly wander into villages searching for food and water, forcing residents to adapt to encounters that were once almost unimaginable.

His committee cleared invasive eucalyptus and acacia before planting indigenous trees across fourteen acres. Beyond restoration, they worked patiently with nearby communities, encouraging protection instead of extraction and rebuilding an emotional connection with the forest that had gradually been forgotten.

For Raju, conservation is deeply personal. Every restored tree represents hope that native grasslands can return despite decades of ecological damage. Yet he knows recovery moves slowly, while invasive species continue spreading across much larger landscapes, leaving wildlife with shrinking habitats and fewer places to survive naturally.
